The Dragon‑Slayer Within: Why Reading Fuels Character and Overcoming Adversity
“Fairy tales do not tell children dragons exist. Children already know dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children dragons can be beaten.” - G.K. Chesterton, paraphrase from Tremendous Trifles
The Dragon‑Slayer Within: Why Reading Fuels Character and Overcoming Adversity
Value of Reading
Whether it is reading or imaginative play there is great value in learning that the dragons of our lives can be beaten. Not only that they can be beaten but also that we can develop the character traits needed to be the conquerors in our own lives. That we do not have to fall prey to fate.
I do not believe I would have made it through some of the hard moments in my own life as well as I have if I had not been introduced to heroes in my childhood. Those heroes don't all wear capes or suites of armor but they do all find a way to overcome adversity. To go through life's challenges and come out the other side having grown because of it.
Does your family have heroes that you can look to for growing character and learning to overcome adversity?
If not I challenge you to read some stories and look for your next hero. You never know, you may need their help in the future.
