City Skies, Family Eyes: Our Night of Stargazing & Aurora Dreams
Stargazing and Northern Lights
Over the last few nights we have been stargazing as a family. It is a little harder to see the stars in the city but we have made out a few. We own a device that basically turns your phone camera into a telescope, it is fun and easy to use.
For our screen-free activity tonight we are trying to see the Northern Lights. We live a little too far south to be able to see it but we saw that someone not to far away from us saw it last night. So fingers crossed we might see it tonight!
Stargazing can be a great way to unplug as a family. There is a lot of joy in looking for different constellations or seeing a shooting star (I saw one tonight). And even if you live in the city like we do there are still some fun ways you can bring a bit of stargazing inside. One way is with paper cups and a flashlight. If you want you can follow this tutorial to create your own constellations to view.
Another way that I like is looking at the wonderful pictures in a book like this one. It gives me a chance to see the wonder and beauty of our skies even if I can't see it with my own eyes in the city.
Time for me to go back outside to see one more time if I can see the Northern Lights. Enjoy your unplugged time with family!
